Warm season, cold and drought tolerant, slender, erect annual grass adapted to well drained soils throughout the temperate USA. Highly palatable and nutritious. Seeds provide a good source of food for birds and small mammals. Excellent for use as cover, pasture, and wildlife habitat enhancement. Also used as a nurse crop but may outcompete establishing perennials.
