Drought tolerant, native succulent evergreen shrub up to 3 ft. tall; found at elevations from 3,000 to 6,000 ft. Leaves are basally clumped; flowers are borne on a long terminal panicle 6 to 17 ft. high. Grows in shallow, rocky or gravelly soils on hillsides and slopes in chaparral, desert and semi-desert grasslands. Cattle eat the trunks and leaf bases; also a good browse species for Bighorn sheep.
