Deciduous, root-spreading, 3 to 8 ft. tall shrub adapted to fertile, moist, well-drained soils in plains, hillsides and along drainages 3,500 to 8,000 feet elevation. Widely distributed but rarely abundant. Forage is highly palatable to wildlife; fruits are an important food source for birds.
