Drought tolerant perennial; full sun. Orange or red flowers bloom July to September. Occurs on rocky hillsides, grassy mesas, and alluvial fans. This species varies a great deal through its broad geographical and altitudinal range. The large yellow fruits, which ripen in early winter, are a favorite food for deer and rodents.
