Deciduous, spreading, loose thicket-forming shrub, 2 to 6 ft. tall with shallow spreading rhizomes adapted to well-drained soils along roadsides, flats, drainages and mountain slopes from 3,500 to 9,000 ft. Establishes quickly on disturbed sites. Forage is moderately palatable to livestock and wildlife and berries are important winter food for birds and small mammals.
