Prosopis pubescens Screwbean mesquite

Small to medium deciduous tree; grows up to 15 ft. in height with an equal spread. Associated with desert riparian woodland and shrub habitats up to 5,500 ft. elevation. Adapted to a wide range of soil textures from sand to heavy clay, but does best in well-drained soils. Often found in slightly to moderately saline soils The common name refers to the unusual coiled fruits which are 1 to 2 in. long. Provides good cover for birds and small mammals, and the sweet, nutritious pods are browsed by livestock and wildlife.
