Deciduous, thicket-forming tree up to 13 ft. tall with shallow spreading roots, capable of fixing nitrogen. Occurs on well-drained moist to seasonally wet sites along drainages and mountain slopes from 3,500 to 7,500 feet. Poor palatability to livestock and wildlife, but provides valuable cover for wildlife.
