Deciduous, rhizomatous shrub, 3 to 5 ft. tall occupying dry to moist sites along drainages, mountain slopes and flats 2,500 to 9,500 feet elevation. Occupies drier sites than R. aureum. Forage is fairly palatable to wildlife and berries are excellent food for birds.
